The fatality resulted from the first of two collisions that turned the northbound 14 Freeway into a parking lot on a 110-degree afternoon.

A Porterville man accused in a fatal hit-and-run collision in Agua Dulce over the weekend is being held at the Santa Clarita jailhouse in lieu of $1 million bail.

Nicolas M. Hernandez, 65, of Porterville, was booked Saturday on a murder charge in the death of Reyna Palacios, 44, of Pomona.

Palacios was killed Saturday while she was tending to her 1999 Honda, which was disabled on the right shoulder of Highway 14 on the northbound side, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Hernandez was driving a 2012 Freightliner big rig, north of Agua Dulce Canyon Road, where he allegedly struck Palacios.

Hernandez did not remain at the scene, according to the CHP report.

Traffic was stopped Saturday while Palacios was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The crash occurred at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, and is believed to be a factor in a subsequent injury collision.

A little more than an hour later, around 12:45 p.m., an SUV was approaching the stopped traffic when it rear-ended another vehicle and rolled over.

The result was a four-car collision south of Agua Dulce Canyon Road.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by CHP Officer Maurer.
