Public Safety and Crime Prevention Info
Week of 09/09/13 through 09/15/13

There were nine part-1 crimes reported in the Newhall area. 1 robbery, 3 burglaries, 2 assaults, 2 vehicle thefts, and 1 shoplift.

During the early morning hours of Monday the 9th, a burglary occurred at a business in the 23300 block of Lyons Ave. There is workable information and a possible suspect has been identified (ref 12423).

A vehicle was stolen from the 25200 block of Avenida Dorena between Sunday night the 8th and Monday morning the 9th. The vehicle was recovered by CHP in Bakersfield on the 9th. The vehicle had been vandalized and all the windows were shattered (ref 12405).

On Wednesday the 11th at 10:15pm the “Shell” station at 23502 Newhall Ave was robbed at gunpoint. The suspects were described as 2 male blacks wearing dark clothes and one of them had a handgun. Santa Clarita Station Detectives are investigating the crime. If you have information about this crime or another crime, you can call the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station at (661)255-1121 and reference report number 12536.

On Wednesday the 11th, an adult male was detained by an employee for shoplifting at a retail store in the 23300 block of Lyons Ave. While the employee was escorting the male to an office, the male fled. Deputies checked the area but the male suspect was not located (ref 12519).

Sometime between Thursday the 12th and Saturday the 14th, auto parts were stolen from a locked storage building in the 22700 block of 15th Street (ref 12659).

On Sunday the 15th at 10:14pm, a dispute in the 23600 block of Newhall Ave between 2 adult males resulted in one of the males being stabbed. The victim was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition. Based on preliminary reports, detectives are investigating what relationship, if any, the victim and the suspect might have. Detectives are unsure yet whether the incident was a case of road rage or was possibly gang-related (ref 12711).

An apartment in the 21300 block of Bottletree Lane was broken in to sometime between Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th. The thief made off with some cell phones and a small amount of cash (ref 12681).

A vehicle was stolen from the area of Valle Del Oro and Dockweiler Drive Sunday at approximately 12:45am. The vehicle was recovered 3 hours later in the 21400 block of Grape Lily Circle (ref 12672).

Beware of telephone scams. I am aware of 3 separate types of phone scams that are appearing in L.A. County. One scam is someone impersonating a DEA agent. The fake DEA Agent has been calling residents who have purchased prescription medication through the mail. The scammer convinces the person they have committed a felony and agents are going to arrest them. The scammer tells the person they can avoid arrest simply by paying a fine, which normally is $3,100 in cash. A second scam is where someone calls a resident who has solicited internet information on personal loans. The scammer negotiates a loan, and then convinces the person they will have to pay a down payment on loan payments. The scam is usually concluded with the victim purchasing cash cards from a retail store and providing the card number to the scammer. A third scam which was told to me this week from a Newhall resident, is someone posing as a police officer and soliciting cash donations for a Police Expo. Don’t be a scam victim. Take the time to research businesses and solicitations. There are numerous legitimate businesses who solicit over the phone, but there are numerous phony ones too. Often times just researching the phone number the solicitors use by placing it into an internet browser will quickly uncover a scam.
