Arguments about California Fish and Wildlife permits for the 21,000-home Newhall Ranch project are scheduled to be heard by the California Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Newhall Ranch has been a target of Santa Clarita Organization for Planning and the Environment, or SCOPE, for nearly two decades.
The group’s concerns center around water use, the loss of floodplains and groundwater recharge areas, and greenhouse gases.
“The greenhouse gas issue is especially important as it may set a precedent for other cases in California,” SCOPE representatives said.
SCOPE is also concerned about the impact on the sensitive habitat of several endangered species.
Newhall Land spokewoman Marlee Lauffer told KHTS AM-1220 the company does not comment on pending litigation.
The court hearing will take place in San Francisco.
In March 2014, the appeals court ruled in favor of Newhall Land and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. The ruling reversed the earlier decision of the trial court judge who found in favor of plaintiffs Center for Biological Diversity.
In CEQA lawsuits, plaintiffs’ attorney and trial costs are paid by the state out of court fines and fees.
