The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards. A number of nominations were earned by California Institute of the Arts alumni for excellence in producing, cinematography, animation, production design and lighting.
This year’s balloting season was marked by the highest voting turnout in the history of the Academy.
The HBO Max documentary “Pee-wee as Himself” received five nominations for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Directing, Picture Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. The film centers on the life and legacy of Paul Reubens (Theater BFA 1973), who served as executive producer and narrates the story in his own words. Reubens, who died July 30, 2023, of cancer, was best known for creating the iconic character Pee-wee Herman.

The 77th Emmy Awards ceremony will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. on CBS and will also stream live and on demand on Paramount+.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place the prior weekend, Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. An edited broadcast will air Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. on FXX and will be available for streaming on Hulu through Oct. 7.
