The College of the Canyons volleyball team has won back-to-back Western State Conference (WSC) South Championships — and 14 straight games — after defeating host Santa Monica College 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-18) on Wednesday night.
Leading the way for COC in the championship clinching game, once again, was sophomore outside hitter — and 2014 WSC player of the year candidate — Serena LeDuff, who racked up 16 kills, an ace and 11 digs for a total of 18 points to lead all scorers.
On the year, LeDuff has amassed 281 kills and 30 aces, to go with 261 digs.
The play of fellow outside hitter Lauren Underwood was also a major factor for the Cougars vs. Santa Monica, as the sophomore totaled 12 kills and 2 aces for 14.5 points. Underwood has played well for Canyons all season and ranks third on the team with 141 kills.
Rounding out the attack for COC were freshman Brooke Garelick‘s eight kills and 10 digs, and sophomore Kaitlyn Reiner‘s mark of seven kills.
Setter Taylor Kasha also turned in 38 assists over three sets, while Keirstyn Anderson came away with 22 digs.
By winning the program’s second straight conference championship, the Cougars are assured a spot in the 2014 CCCAA Women’s Volleyball SoCal Regionals, which begin later this month.
However, Canyons will first host a final pair of regular season home games.
COC will next host Bakersfield College at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.
The Cougars will then host a final regular season home game — and accompanying sophomore night ceremonies — at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, as Canyons takes on visiting Antelope Valley College.
