The Santa Clarita City Council is inviting the community to attend the Newhall Metrolink Parking Expansion and New Passive Recreation Area Groundbreaking Ceremony on Monday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Newhall Metrolink Station on Market Street in Old Town Newhall.
The Newhall Metrolink Parking Project will construct an additional 95 parking spaces on an existing 38,000-square-foot, grass-paved and unimproved lot adjacent to the existing parking area. The parking expansion will increase the number of available shared parking between Metrolink riders and Community Center visitors to 321 spaces.
The existing parking capacity for the Newhall Metrolink station does not meet the existing demand during weekdays when the lot is routinely filled to capacity. Also, street parking in the vicinity of the station is limited due to the competing demands for parking by the numerous commercial businesses in downtown Newhall.
The project will also construct a new half acre recreation area directly behind the Newhall Community Center. Park improvements will include: benches, picnic tables, trees, lights with glare shields for security, walkways and irrigated planting areas.
Construction will begin this month and is expected to be complete by late December. The City received $950,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant funds to construct the additional parking spaces with the recreation area funded by Quimby funds.
No RSVP required. For more information call 661-255-4939.
