A 2017 Humanities For All Quick Grant of $3,500 has been awarded to the City of Santa Clarita in support of the City of Santa Clarita Public Library’s initiative, “One Story One City.”
Grants of this nature are competitive and awarded to initiatives that express the history and experiences of California’s places and people, with the intent of sharing these stories widely. Initiatives chosen as recipients of this grant cater to an appreciation of commonalities and differences within a community and teach about new ways to live well together.
“I’m so pleased that we received this grant,” said Karen Cruze, Library Outreach Coordinator and Humanities Lead for the grant. “It enables us to make our program even better than previous years and expand on our mission to the community.”
“One Story One City” seeks to encourage city-wide discussions and engagement across all ages and interests. In March 2017, the Santa Clarita Public Library is featuring Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt. This nonfiction novel focuses on the women “computers” who handled complicated math problems at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Their work contributed to the success of the country’s space program in immeasurable ways. In addition to encouraging the public to read the book, the Library will be hosting programs for all ages, including an author event and a panel featuring JPL employees. Paperback copies of Rise of the Rocket Girls will be given to a variety of local groups, including high schools and the SCV Senior Center.
