[WSC, Aug. 3] – The Western State Conference is pleased to announce that College of the Canyons has claimed its second straight WSC Supremacy Award for their athletic department’s performance throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. The Cougars won a total of six conference championships throughout the year and led the conference with a 6.50 average across 15 WSC sponsored sports.

College of the Canyons won the conference crown in women’s volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer and women’s golf in the Fall. They followed that up with two more team championships in the Spring; winning the women’s track & field championship along with the men’s golf title. Their men’s cross country and men’s golf programs would go on to win their respective California Community College Athletic Association team championships.

Canyons finished second in overall points with 104 total points scored, but their 6.50 per sport average edged second place Santa Barbara City College’s 6.19 points per sport average. The Vaqueros accumulated the most overall points with 112.

Santa Barbara won four conference championships during the 2014-2015 academic year to earn its highest finish since 2010. The Vaqueros racked up the most points via women’s sports with 63 points, while Cuesta College earned the most points via men’s sports with 40.

Rounding out the top five were; Los Angeles Mission College (5.90), Cuesta College (5.87), and 19-time WSC Supremacy champ Ventura College (5.17).

The Western State Conference Supremacy Award was established during the 1980-1981 academic year. In its 37th year of existence, only eight current WSC colleges have won the award, and Canyons is just the fourth to win at least two straight.

The Western State Conference was established in 1950, making it the oldest community college conference in California.
