College of the Canyons’ women’s golf team notched its first tournament victory of the season on Monday, capturing the Western State Conference-neutral event at Buenaventura Golf Club as part of the two-day season-opening South Coast Classic.
Action got underway Sunday at Olivas Links Golf Course with a collection of nine teams from across the region competing in the annual event. Sunday’s round was an exhibition for the Cougars, with the regular season officially getting underway the following morning.
COC freshman Haruka Koda got her Cougar career started with a three-under round of 69 to earn medalist honors on Monday.
That score helped push Canyons (291) past second place Santa Barbara City College (322) in the conference portion of the event. Bakersfield College (358) was third followed by Citrus College (378).
Freshman Jessie Linn tied for third place on the day with her round of 73. Joanna Roecker was third for Canyons with her round of 74. Gina Chung rounded out the scoring for COC with a mark of 75.
Despite winning the WSC tourney, Canyons was forced to settle for second place in the South Coast Classic standings.
Sierra College, the state runner up in 2017, won the event with a two-day score of 624 (334/290). The Wolverines also bested COC by a single stroke in Monday’s round. Canyons (614-323/291) was followed by SBCC (671-349/322) in the third place spot.
