Keiona Mathews broke five school records in two years at COC.
College of the Canyons sophomore guard Keiona Mathews has accepted a full scholarship to play at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), it was announced on Monday afternoon.
“Keke had arguably the finest season of any player I have coached in my 22 year career at College of the Canyons” College of the Canyons head women’s basketball coach Greg Herrick said. “She set a goal for herself two years ago to earn this reward and worked very hard to achieve it. I’m very proud of her.
Mathews signing comes on the heels of becoming the 25th Cougar to be named All-State after being voted the Western State Conference, North Division, Player of the Year.
The sophomore finished tied for second in the state in scoring (24.8), third in points (694), 18th in free throw percentage (77.3) and 26th in rebounding (10.2). She also broke five school records – most points scored in a game (47), free throw attempts in a game (21), free throw attempts in a season (225), free throws made in a game (18) and free throws made in a season (197). Mathews also tied the school record for most field goals made in a game with 17.
Mathews becomes the third player to transfer to TAMIU under Herrick and the 34th player to earn an athletic scholarship under the 22-year head coach. La Treshe Jones and Angelica Sahagun also played for the Dustdevils.
The Texas A&M International Dustdevils are a member of the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference and finished the 2013-2014 campaign with a program-best record of 19-9, 15-5. The team, who is led by third-year head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson,captured the regular season Heartland Conference crown and earned its first-ever NCAA tournament at-large bid.
