SAN DIMAS — College of the Canyons finished a stroke behind tourney winner Santa Barbara City College to see its conference tournament win streak halted at five during the Western State Conference event played at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course on Monday.
The Cougars did claim medalist honors with freshman Nobuhiko Wakaari finishing with a one-under score of 71 to top the field. Wakaari has now medaled in five of eight WSC events, in addition to last week’s Southern California Preview event at Los Serranos Country Club.
COC sophomore Tom Sims finished fifth overall with a round of 74 and Matthew Mansholt tied for sixth after carding a 75.
Jules Lavigne, James Wilkes and Anguerrand Voisin each returned to the clubhouse with scores of 77.
Canyons recorded a five-man score of 374 to finish behind SBCC at 373. Ventura College was a distant third at 395 followed by Glendale College at 403.
Prior to Monday’s result, the Cougars had won five straight WSC events dating back to Feb. 25.
Canyons remains in first place in the WSC season standings with a conference record of 60-4. The Vaqueros are also in the hunt with a mark of 58-6.
The Cougars next play at WSC No. 9 hosted by Glendale College at Oakmont Country Club on Monday. Tee time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
