The College of the Canyons football program has released its 2018 spring football practice schedule with sessions having started Monday, April 9.
Canyons finished the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 9-2 and 4-1 mark in conference play to finish second in the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) National Division, Northern Conference.
After narrowly missing out on a trip to the state playoffs, COC defeated Mt. SAC 28-16 in the Western State Bowl.
At season’s end Canyons had had 16 players named to the 2017 SCFA National Division, Northern League All-League Team, highlighted by freshman quarterback Andrew Brito’s designation as the Offensive Player of the Year.
In all, the Cougars were recognized with eight players earning All-SCFA First-Team honors and seven named to the Second-Team.
Additionally, Brito, sophomore wide receiver Desean Holmes and freshman linebacker KJ Latu were all named to the 2017 Region III All-California Community College Football Team.
Canyons also had 11 players named to the 2017 Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Scholar-Athlete Team.
The Cougars have seen several players sign with NCAA Division I programs this off season, with some having already enrolled at their new institutions for the spring 2018 semester.
COC defensive back Bobby Brown transferred to San Jose State University, punter Travis Reiner is now at Indiana State University, while Holmes is attending Florida Atlantic University. Likewise, long snapper Hidetaka Kanazawa is a preferred walk-on at University of Michigan.
In February, COC defensive end Dorian Gerald, the No. 1 ranked JUCO defensive end prospect in the nation, signed his National Letter of Intent with University of Arkansas after considering University of Florida, Texas A&M University, Ole Miss and University of Louisville among his top schools.
COC standout defensive end Noel Iwuchukwu also signed with Arkansas State University.
The Cougars will kick off the 2018 season with a road game vs. Saddleback College on Saturday, Sept. 1, in Mission Viejo.
