1993 - Hart High grad Dee Dee Myers (1979) becomes first female White House press secretary [story]
Dee Dee Myers

Chiquita-Web-Image-006After years of discussion, the future of Chiquita Canyon Landfill and its attempt to increase waste hauling operations, is expected to be decided sometime in the first quarter of 2017.

A Dec. 13 hearing at West Ranch High gave area residents, business interests and government officials yet another chance to discuss the pros and cons of the landfill’s expansion within its existing lot. However, after rounds of meetings, the issuing and re-issuing of report after environmental report and social media posts criticized on both sides, most minds are made up — except for the ones who matter most, those making a staff recommendation to Barger.

We have asked for a health survey to be done in Val Verde, what they did instead was to clump Val Verde into a giant group of communities all over the two valleys. Then they said Val Verde is fine. We asked them to actually go door to door and meet the residents who endure the stench and then hear their breathing. The Particular Matter of 2.5 has huge impacts on Asthmatics, yet this is overlooked. In 2014, for 66 days p.m. 2.5 was significant. The DEIR admits p.m. 2.5. will be significant. It can and is deadly overtime. http://www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/189051/Health-effects-of-particulate-matter-final-Eng.pdf
It is recommended that no more than 3 days in a year should be endured. Hear in Val Verde we will get the breeze from the landfill 6% of the time according to their DEIR. It is actually 6 to 9%. That will be one 1 hour, 24 minutes and 4 seconds a day, every day. If you figure in 6%, that will be 446 hours a year. It would be o.k. if I could just close my windows for that time. The wind here is ever changing so it is not a clump of an hour but through out the entire day. I can be sitting here on a pleasant day and then I have to run indoors and close all windows because a sudden stench has hit me, and is drifting into the house. I then am forced to go to air conditioning at a much higher expense then I would like to be forced into. Since I have moved here I have been given an asthma medication just to sleep through the night. Every breath is harsh and many of those breaths hurt. When Univision was here and they interviewed a little girl, they asked her to describe how she feels. She pointed to her chest area and said, “It hurts.”
I would like to say that the county is considering our health into the equation, but I would be wrong. At a meeting a spokesperson for the county said, “We have been focused on getting the Landfill approved.” The last round Val Verde was promised air quality test in Val Verde. No such test ever took place, and int he future they will not take place. To take air quality test when the odors are obvious would mean that the county would have to accept that human lives in Val Verde matter. The sad truth is that they do not.

Where are you getting this info? There is NO hearing scheduled for January. The close of comments isn’t even until the 9th of Jan and they would have to give 30 days notice for a hearing, if they can even respond to the comments instantaneously, which doesn’t seem possible. Could the landfill advocates be a little fast and lose with the info they are providing you?

  5. Matthew Kelly says:

Just sign it off. The county will approve it.
