Two days after he voluntarily surrendered himself to local sheriff’s deputies, Saugus resident Casey Crockett pleaded innocent Thursday to child molestation.
Crockett, 25, made a brief appearance in San Fernando Superior Court where he was charged with one count of a lewd act upon a child. The charge relates to his alleged molestation of an 11-year-old boy Monday afternoon in a bathroom in the Westfield Valencia Town Center’s food court.
After the alleged act occurred, the boy’s father confronted Crockett and a physical altercation ensued, officials said.
Crockett turned himself in Tuesday afternoon at the SCV Sheriff’s Station, where he was held in lieu of $300,000 bail.
The district attorney’s office said the felony molestation charge would warrant a state prison sentence and registration as a sex offender. If convicted as charged, Crockett could face up to eight years in prison.
Prosecutors sought a $1 million bail setting, but the judge set bail at $250,000.
Although not definitive, a search of Los Angeles County Superior Court records indicates Crockett has no prior criminal record.
He is due back in court Nov. 15.
