Benefitting from their club’s second consecutive national tournament appearance and outstanding work in the classroom, six members of The Master’s College women’s soccer squad have been named to various postseason teams.
After being named GSAC Player of the Year earlier, Katie Farris (Santa Clarita, CA) added NAIA All-American second-team honors to her 2014 resume. An honorable mention All-American last year, the senior forward tallied a career-high 41 points (18 goals, five assists), the second-highest, single-season total in program history.
Joining Farris on the All-American squad are fellow seniors Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) and Jordan Benson (Corona, CA) as first-time, honorable mention honorees. Coyle’s 23 points (10 goals, three assists) trailed only Farris and earned the midfielder a program-tying, third All-GSAC selection. Meanwhile, Benson, the third All-GSAC performer on the squad, keyed a defense that notched nine shutouts and allowed just 22 goals in 20 matches.
Off the field, a quartet of Mustangs earned both GSAC Scholar Athlete and Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete accolades. Qualifying for these honors for the second year in a row were Coyle and senior Devon Goff (Canyon Country, CA) while senior Jessica Long (Wailuku, HI) and junior Tara Struiksma (Ontario, CA) were first-time choices.
To be nominated by an institution’s head coach or Sports Information Director for both conference and national scholar-athlete honors, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale and must have achieved junior academic status to qualify for the honor.
TMC went 13-6-1 in 2014, finishing 7-2-1 and in third place in the GSAC. After getting knocked out in the first round of the conference tournament, the Mustangs rebounded with an NAIA National Championship Opening Round victory over Trinity International of Illinois before falling in the second round of the national tournament to Northwestern Ohio.
