2013 - Motion picture helicopter provider David Gibbs of Valencia and two others are killed in crash at Acton movie ranch; Hollywood's deadliest on-set incident since triple-fatal "Twilight Zone Movie" helicopter crash in Valencia in 1982 [report]
NTSB report on helicopter crash

A trio of SCV historians are compiling information for a new book to be called “Legendary Locals of the Santa Clarita Valley,” and they’re inviting the public to submit ideas and photographs.

The three are Dr. Alan Pollack, president of the SCV Historical Society, along with local film historians E.J. and Kim Stephens. Pollack said Sunday they’ve gotten approval for the book from Arcadia Publishing, niche publisher of ultra-local and regional history books for communities across the country.

Among the books in Arcadia’s “Images of America” series are two titles of particular SCV interest: “Santa Clarita Valley” by John Boston (2009) and “Newhall” by Maggi Perkins (2010).

E.J. Stephens, one of the three new co-authors, already has an Arcadia book to his credit: “Early Warner Bros. Studios,” which he wrote with fellow film buff Marc Wanamaker. The Stephens-Wanamaker team recently completed a second Arcadia book on the history of Griffith Park, to be released in November. Stephens also co-hosts the “SCV In the Movies” series on SCVTV.

The new “Legendary Locals” title will focus on both historical and contemporary figures, Pollack said.

The publisher is looking for “stories that really tug at your heartstrings,” he said. Famous personalities will be documented, but they also intend to feature “unsung local heroes and stories of humanity.”

Subjects could be notorious, or they might have started charities. “They could be teachers, coaches, town officials, or old timers who are known around town for various reasons.”

“We are asking for your ideas and suggestions,” Pollack said.

The authors can be contacted through the SCV History Buffs group page on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/groups/scvhistorybuffs/ – or by calling the SCV Historical Society at 661-254-1275.
