LANCASTER – The Lancaster JetHawks put up all five of their runs in the second inning and held off a late rally by the Inland Empire 66ers to win 5-4 on Sunday night at The Hangar.
With the victory and Rancho Cucamonga’s loss, the JetHawks clinched the Second Half South Division Championship. They won both halves in 2017.
Avery Romero led off the bottom of the second with his sixth home run of the season, one of his two hits in the game. With two out and the bases empty, Chris Rabago reached on a fielding error by 66ers third baseman Jordan Serena. The miscue proved to be pivotal, as four unearned runs followed. Wilson Soriano delivered a two-run triple and Garrett Hampson blasted a two-run homer.
Jared Walsh led Inland Empire with three hits, two RBI, and a run scored. His RBI single brought in the second of two runs for the 66ers in the third inning. Inland Empire added one in the fifth on another RBI single by Walsh.
Ty Culbreth (7-1) earned the victory for the JetHawks with his eighth straight quality start. The left-hander went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out five. Marc Magliaro followed with a perfect seventh inning out of the bullpen, including a pair of strikeouts.
Alexander Guillen was summoned for a two-inning save opportunity. He allowed a run in the eighth, but picked up a key strikeout to strand the tying run on second. The 66ers put their first two on in the ninth and Guillen was able to work out of the jam with no damage done. The save was his 12th this season.
Here’s the box score.
The four-game series concludes with the regular season finale on Monday afternoon at The Hangar. First pitch is 2:05 p.m.
