LAKE ELSINORE – The Lancaster JetHawks stole five bases in a 5-3 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm in the series opener on Friday night at The Diamond.
The five stolen bases for the JetHawks (73-58, 35-26) brought their franchise-record total to 286 with nine games left in the regular season, putting them on pace to eclipse 300 steals for the season.
The loss, combined with a Rancho Cucamonga win, brought Lancaster back into a first place tie in the overall South Division standings.
Lancaster jumped ahead in the second inning on a Scott Burcham two-out RBI-single, but starter Trey Killian (11-9) was unable to hold the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Carlos Belen started the inning with a single and quickly scored on a Ruddy Giron double. Rod Boykin drove home Giron with a single to give the Storm (60-71, 25-36) a lead they would not relinquish.
Lake Elsinore took a 5-1 lead with two runs in a fifth inning that would end up being Killian’s last. The right-hander allowed five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk in five complete innings of work.
Brad Schreiber relieved Killian and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit with four strikeouts and no walks, to keep Lancaster close.
The JetHawks cut the lead in half in the sixth when Wilson Soriano hit a slow roller up the third base line with the bases loaded and two outs.
Pitcher Adrian De Horta (3-1) fielded the ball and threw to first base but his throw sailed into right field. Two runs scored on the play which was ruled an infield single and error.
Scott Burcham also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at home plate by right fielder River Stevens to end the inning.
Wilson Soriano singled with one out in the ninth inning, stole second and third base, but Colby Blueberg stranded him at third and pitched a scoreless frame for his ninth save.
