LANCASTER – One night after a pitchers’ duel in Visalia, the JetHawks came out on the wrong end of a slugfest Friday against Rancho Cucamonga, 14-9. A season-best crowd of 4,544 came to The Hangar for Aerospace Appreciation Night.
Matt Dennis (1-4) tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in a losing effort. The righty worked into the fifth inning, giving up five runs on seven hits. Dennis became the first JetHawk since Peter Lambert last June to strike out 10 in a game.
Lancaster (11-11) had a couple of early leads, but could not stay in front. Brian Serven untied the game in the fourth inning with his second home run of the season, making it 3-2.
The lead was short-lived, as Rancho Cucamonga (11-11) answered back immediately. The Quakes scored three in the top of the fifth inning, going ahead on a home run by Cristian Santana, 4-3.
The Quakes scored in five-straight innings in the middle of the contest to pull away. Rancho scored 14 times on 16 hits, including a trio of home runs. Lancaster did strike out 17 batters in the contest, a season-best.
Imani Abdullah (1-1) earned the win as the lone Rancho pitcher not to allow a run Friday night. Of the eight pitchers who appeared in the contest, six allowed three or more runs.
Manny Melendez went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, extending his hitting streak to six games for the JetHawks. Max George hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, giving him a home run in three-straight games.
Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga are tied for the top spot in the South Division at 11-11 through 22 games. None of the four teams have a winning record.
The series continues Saturday night at The Hangar. Logan Longwith (0-2) goes for his first win of the season against Rancho righty Jordan Sheffield (0-2). First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans will take home an All-Star Duffel Bag.
