[KHTS] – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in Canyon Country just after midnight Thursday.

“It sounds like he ran out into traffic. He was jogging on the side of the roadway, as cars were driving down Whites Canyon Road, he ran across the street,” said Detective Thomas Brooks of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The first car swerved around him and he was hit by a second car.”

The crash occurred on Whites Canyon Road, north of Nadal Street near Canyon High School, around 12:06 a.m.

The victim is a white male who appears to be in his 40s, Brooks said. Identification and next-of-kin notification was still pending.

“They believe he was possibly intoxicated,” Brooks said, adding that coroner’s officials will be able to make that determination.

This incident is continuing to be investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

@Ramon Caranza, the sidewalks in many parts of Santa Clarita are difficult to run on because tree roots and settling ground have caused the concrete slabs to become uneven. It’s easy to trip and fall on them. Since the city puts a higher priority on making sure roads are even for cars’ smooth passage rather than sidewalks are even for the safety of pedestrians, it’s often less hazardous to run on the side of the road rather than on the sidewalk. I run well over 1000 miles a year on Santa Clarita roadways and the majority of my running is done in the bike lane or on the shoulder.

And BTW many of the roads don’t HAVE sidewalks.
