Dave Child

Dave Child

A marvelous evening is planned for 10×10 this month with comedic fireworks and moths everywhere – well, Moth StorySLAM and GrandSLAM winners, that is.

The July 7 event (REP East Playhouse in Newhall, 7 p.m.) is packed full of talent with award-winning storytellers, filmmakers and comedians. It will be a truly magical evening … pun intended, as a magician will be on hand this month. You won’t want to miss this fun, free evening of entertainment.

The New Mexican kicks things off, with his feet handling percussion, a left hand on slide guitar and banjo, and right hand on lead guitar and banjo, while his mouth handles vocals and harmonica.

Comedian and storyteller Brandon Burkhart officially opens the evening. He has won four Moth StorySLAMs – including the Moth GrandSLAM championship – and two Write Clubs. His stories have been featured at the Comedy Central Stage and in SHINE Storytelling’s Best of 2014.

Fellow Moth StorySLAMS and GrandSLAMS winner Vicki Juditz follows, showing off her storytelling chops, which she’s sharpened in performances in New York, Hong Kong and everywhere in between. Her story, “Boca,” aired on NPR’s UnFictional, and she has been seen on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “My Name is Earl,” “Yes, Dear,” and as a hapless housewife in countless commercials.

Singer-songwriter Tom Renaud shares his talent as he takes the stage with his guitar. He fell in love with the instrument early in life and has been playing for more than 40 years. His most recent recording is a live album, “Watercolor.”

SCV local magician Brian Hoffman is up next. He’s the president of Ring 280 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians in Santa Clarita and has performed magic shows throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

From magic to mockumentaries: Next comes a unique, comedic short film from an esteemed filmmaker, Fawzia Mirza, whose films recently landed her a trip to the White House where she was honored as a White House Champion of Change for her work as an Asian American and Pacific Islander artist and storyteller. She has also been recognized by Indiewire in a feature on Top 10 Creatives and has been featured by NBC News, CBC Radio Q, Marie Claire, Mic, the Chicago Sun Times, The L.A. Times and many other publications and online media outlets.

Raabtune Russell

Raabtune Russell

Raabtune Russell keeps the laughs coming. This 6-foot-2 comedian truly exemplifies stand-up, standing tall with a mullet stretching 6 inches and 2 centimeters. He’s particularly skilled in the art of self-deprecation and turns his personal life experiences and today’s social issues into something we can all laugh about.

More music follows with Darrin Yarbrough, who plays electric, acoustic and slid-dobro guitar for Shure Thing Band.

The evening closes with comedy from storyteller Dave Child, followed by comedian Lang Parker. Dave has performed stand-up at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, the Boston Comedy Festival, Crom Fest in Denver (and Omaha) and the Hell Yes Fest in New Orleans, as well as at several weird bars and weirder clubs. He has also performed in many of Los Angeles’ top comedy shows and regularly performs with a comedy dance troupe called Liquid Feet. As if that weren’t enough, Dave is also a National AirSex Champion (yes, that’s a real thing). Plus, he’s another Moth Grandslam Winner. It’s truly a night full of them.

As for Lang, she’s a pretty big deal – known for her comedic timing as both a performer and comedic writer. She floored the judges when she performed on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and regularly tours the United States and abroad to entertain the men and women of the U.S. armed forces.

You might also recognize her from “Beverly Hills 90210,” “The Ellen Degeneres Show” or countless other televised performances that include commercials, films and TV shows. She has won California’s Funniest Female Contest and runs her own L.A. comedy show, “West of the 405,” recently voted Top 8 Must-Attend Shows.

Luckily, you get to see her perform without going anywhere near the 405. What a relief.
