On June 11 get swept away to Neverland as the Santa Clarita Ballet sprinkles the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center with pixie dust in their updated presentation of Peter Pan.
Then, prepare for the Creole enchantment of Second Line; a new modern ballet choreographed by Carol Guidry, Santa Clarita Ballet’s artistic director.
Staged for the first time, Second Line is inspired by the tradition of New Orleans French Quarter jazz funeral processions and will be told in three parts: a solemn procession, an elegy featuring individual dances from each of the 19 upper-level Company dancers and four guest professionals, and a celebratory ending. Second Line dancers will be accompanied by a live jazz quartet featuring music composed by 2006 Music Center Spotlight Award winner Garret Lang.
This new work showcases the most accomplished Company dancers, many of whom have participated in prestigious ballet intensive programs and dance competitions nationwide. Our guest professionals are all Santa Clarita Ballet Company alumni and include Anna Carnes (State Street Ballet), Alexandra Finley (Berkeley Ballet Theater, 2016 Genee International Qualifier), Celine Kiner (USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance), and Anatalia Hordov (L.A. Dance Project School, San Francisco Ballet Trainee Program, 2015 Genee International Finalist).
Guidry’s work will immediately follow the Ballet’s second staging of Peter Pan, which has been reimagined for a new audience. Peter Pan features a full-scale swashbuckling ship captained by the evil Hook and all of the classic tale’s beloved characters, including Tinkerbell, Nana the dog, and the eternal child, Peter Pan, played by senior company member Danielle Lieberman.
Lieberman, who has trained with the Ballet for 14 years, appeared as the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Santa Clarita Ballet’s 2015 Nutcracker.
Lieberman will attend the highly selective University of North Carolina School of Arts Classical Ballet undergraduate program this fall.
