On the first Thursday of each month, Thursdays@Newhall’s 10 by 10 Variety Show at the Repertory East Playhouse offers a little something for everyone: comedy, live music, storytelling, short films and more. This Thursday, Aug. 4, will highlight local entertainers and filmmakers beginning at 7 p.m.

In addition to seasoned, popular comics and storytellers, this month’s 10 by 10 shines a light on some up-and-coming local talent as filmmakers Kelli Clark and Cammy Ylo screen their dramatic short film, “Murder of Crowe,” made through the directing program at The Master’s College.

In the film, Alexis Boozer Sterling (Leap Year, Emma Approved) is Rebecca Crowe, a famous author who finds herself caught in the middle of a gruesome murder scene in her own home. Shocked and impacted by the death of her own husband and his hidden girlfriend, she decides to write a book ending with a twist.

Anthony Tyler Quinn (Jonathan Turner on Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World) is Detective Hutch who arrives at the murder scene to discern what really happened. Clark and Ylo collaborated on this professional short film as their capstone project at The Master’s College.

“The collaboration process in The Master’s College Film Department is unlike any college/university program I’ve ever seen or experienced,” states Kelli Clark. “Being a student, it is essential to work with professionals and hone your skills while working on a level that will give you a head start before entering fully into the film community. Professors Bob Dickson and Matt Green give students the opportunity to professionally learn the trade, providing us with the tools to be able to initiate our careers in an intense yet productive environment.”

Clark and Ylo were able to not only work with professional, working Hollywood actors, like Quinn and Sterling, but also with award-winning industry professionals like Ryan and Koren Young, of the Santa Clarita-based Arcay Studios.

Ryan and Koren grew up in the Santa Clarita Valley and have been making films in the area for most of their lives. They’ve presented at Media Day at College of the Canyons, in addition to doing professional sound work with students at The Master’s College for four different productions, including “Murder of Crowe.” Koren was also a featured panelist at the Santa Clarita Public Library panel on Super Careers in Technology, and Ryan Young has won back-to-back Golden Reel Awards for his work as a sound editor.

“Murder of Crowe” demonstrates what makes the City of Santa Clarita special, and the ways in which industry professionals collaborate and connect with up and coming talent at local colleges.

10 by 10 is a chance to see the fruits of their labor and enjoy the intriguing short film along with lots of other great performances.
