Domestic violence is not a fairy tale as every survivor will tell you. To help raise awareness about domestic violence and generate donations for local intervention, prevention and education services, the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley will host its second annual Fairy Berry Breakfast on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at Robinson Ranch for supporters of all ages.
The centerpiece of the family-focused event is the debut of fairy houses created by residents, business representatives, and community groups. The one-of-a-kind, handmade “shelters” can be whimsical, artistic, or made of natural elements, and prizes will be awarded for the best fairy shelters. Proceeds raised at the event will benefit the DVC SCV’s women’s shelter, which provides services for women and children.
Tickets for the Fairy Berry Breakfast are $25 per person and include a hearty pancake breakfast complete with blueberries and wish dust (powdered sugar), a silent auction, face painting, treats, and fairies. Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume.
“Domestic violence is something we need to talk about, and yet for most people it’s taboo,” said DVC SCV Executive Director Linda Davies. “We want to get people engaged, helping one another, and understanding that domestic violence affects more people than most think. It’s also critical for people to understand that while domestic violence may have been a part of your past, with intervention and education, it doesn’t have to be a part of your future.”
To ready for the Fairy Berry Breakfast, the Domestic Violence Center will host a pre-building party on Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at Savia, where individuals, families, business representative, and community groups are invited to begin building their fairy shelters. The cost to participate is $10 per entry and includes the fairy house registration fee. Savia is located at 23780 Newhall Avenue.
The second annual Fairy Berry Breakfast has many community supporters, including the following event sponsors: The Reape-Rickett Law Firm, the Canyon Country Optimist Club, Whitening Lightning, Corben Optometry, Barbara Cochran, Golden Empire Mortgage, as well as media sponsors Hometown Station KHTS AM 1220 and The Magazine of Santa Clarita.
All entries for the Fairy Houses and Beyond Contest must be registered before the May 17 event at www.dvc-scv.org or on Facebook at DVCSantaClarita. For more information about the pre-building party or the Fairy Berry Breakfast, please contact the Domestic Violence Center at (661) 259-8175.
