May 2: Western Music Association Showcase at El Trocadero Steakhouse
Time: 6:30 p.m.

Musicians and cowboy poets perform stories and songs of the romantic Old West, contemporary music of the American West, and songs of the open range and the American cowboy. To perform your Western music or poetry with them during this event, email wmacc@westernmusiccalifornia.org.

May 3: CalArts Expo 2018 at California Institute of the Arts

Reflecting California Institute of the Arts’ experimental ethos, the Institute’s CalArts Expo rolls out its latest projects integrating cutting-edge engineering and computer science with visual and performing arts. Highlighting new student and faculty projects made over this last academic year, the Expo’s exhibitions and performances run from early afternoon to late evening in the ROD Music Hall, MOD Theater, Main Gallery, Wild Beast, Machine Lab, and Lund Dance Theater. The Expo reflects the latest practices in technologically sophisticated arts, involving viewers in interactive experiences, bringing artists’ perspectives to computer games, forecasting future directions of digital performance, animation, and projection mapping, and exploring the latest in software and hardware as a means of commenting on our increasingly connected world.

The public is invited to experience the CalArts Expo’s exhibitions and concerts on the CalArts’ campus featuring creatively adventurous and technologically imaginative new work from across all disciplines of the Institute.

May 3: ARTree – Figure Drawing at ARTree Community Arts Center

Are you an artist frustrated with the lack of opportunities to draw in Santa Clarita? Come to ARTree Community Arts Center for a chance to really explore your creative potential using a live model. Just drop in and bring a pencil and paper.

Every 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays of the month, with some additional dates throughout the year.

May 3: 10 by 10: Variety Show at The MAIN
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Join us for 10 by 10, the FREE monthly variety show in Old Town Newhall featuring music, film, storytelling, magic, comedy and more! Presented by Valencia Auto Center, 10 by 10 occurs on the first Thursday of every month when 10 performers from a variety of genres perform a 10-minute piece of their choosing. Every month is different; you never know what you will see on stage!

Performances in May: Storytelling and songs from Dennis Garcia; Storytelling from Claire Partin, Alan Salazar, and Stan Sellars; Comedy from Lisa Alvarado and Betsy Salkind; Music from Abby Lyons; Magic from Raul Fernandez; Ventriloquism from Sachoff; and the Film Short “Wild Things Run Free.” Visit the 10 by 10 website for performer bios.

May 3: JAM Session & Concert – Tropical Dance at Old Town Newhall Library
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Dance to the beat and experience something unexpected with JAM Sessions – fun, interactive music and dance events hosted in conjunction with the Ford Theatre Foundation. Presented by Valencia Auto Center, the evening integrates live dance instruction from professional instructors with live band performances.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring a chair if you just plan on listening to the music. JAM Sessions are participatory and centered around movement and music. All JAMs are FREE, and all ages and skill levels are welcome.

May 4: Comedy Mashup Presents: Tone Bell at The MAIN
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Comedy Mashup returns to The MAIN on May 4 for another great evening of comedy and improv. Headliner Tone Bell, of Netflix’s Disjointed and CW’s The Flash, recently finished performing for Just for Laughs in Canada. Joining Bell is Brandon Gibson from ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat and Blackish, Comedy Mashup’s Sebastian Corley, and show host Mike Falzone, of YouTube’s Mike in the Morning. Tonight’s improv features a superstar cast of improvisers that will keep you guessing what happens next.

A little more about the cast: Comedy Mashup is a group of working comedians and improvisers from all over the Valley and Hollywood that come together once a month to put on a show that is one half stand up and the other half improv comedy.

May 4: Little Shop of Horrors at Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons
Time: 8:00 p.m.

The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and intent toward global domination! Book and lyrics by Howard Ashman; music by Alan Menken.
