The Master’s College baseball team moved up to number seven in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics baseball poll released Tuesday.
The ranking was five spots higher than the #12 ranking the NAIA gave TMC (26-8 overall, 16-8 in GSAC) in its preseason poll.
“The Lord is gracious. We’re seventh in the country,” said TMC head coach Monte Brooks. “What an honor.”
Last season, the Mustangs jumped from unranked in the preseason to number five in the first NAIA poll with a record of 26-9. The Mustangs were number six in the postseason poll after making it to the NAIA World Series.
TMC senior Tommy Kister (Saugus HS) was the closer on that World Series team; he takes Brooks’ sentiment a step further.
“We’re honored to be ranked number seven,” Kister said. “(But) our goal is to be the best team in the nation. We want to be top five and number one if possible.”
One team that found itself in the top five Tuesday was San Diego Christian College, which beat TMC two out of three games last weekend. The NAIA ranked the Hawks fifth, up from their #22 ranking in the preseason poll.
Concordia University-Irvine and Vanguard University rounded out the GSAC teams in the top 25 at #12 and #25 respectively. Westmont College received votes.
The new poll means the Mustangs will finish their conference schedule with three out of four series against teams in the top 25 or receiving votes.
Notes: The GSAC posted the most top 25 teams in the poll (4)…TMC lost by one run each to NAIA #1 Faulkner (Ala.) and #3 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at the 2013 NAIA World Series…Former TMC outfielder James Sloan is a redshirt for #9 LSU Shreveport…TMC beat #14 Tabor 1-0 in their NAIA Opening Round tournament.
