SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s track and field team traveled down the coast for the Mangrum Invitational this past weekend which resulted in a new school record and an individual title.
In the 200-meter dash, Both Andrew Sanchez (Van Nuys, CA) and Sam Jaimes (Canyon Country, CA) bagged third-place in their respective sections with strong times of 22.48 seconds and 23.38. Later on in the 400 meters, Sanchez clinched fourth in a consistent time of 49.42. Jaimes came in sixth in the 100 meters with a respectable time of 11.45.
One of the highlights of the meet was the solo performance from Skyler Mikesell (Ft. Wayne, IN) in the 800-meter event where he took the lead heading into the last lap and kicked it in for first overall with a blistering time of 1:56.24. As a result, Mikesell’s time was the fastest for a freshman in the program’s growing history.
In the 3,000-meter race, the duo of Andrew Orona (Newhall, CA) and Josh Sherfey (Stevenson Ranch, CA) toed the line against a tough field including Mustang alum John Gilbertson. With Gilbertson controlling the pace, Orona and Sherfey moved up with a lap to go closing in fifth and sixth with blistering times of 8:38 and 8:39. Orona’s time is now the fastest in the school’s history. Notably, Gilbertson comfortably won with a searing time of 8:17.
For the next two weeks, the Mustangs will continue to train in preparation for the GSAC Track and Field Championships held at Westmont College in Santa Barbara on April 24 and 25.
