As one might imagine at a school where sport and spiritual life aren’t compartmentalized, The Master’s University women’s volleyball coach Allan Vince gleaned a biblical principle from Wednesday’s five-set loss at the University of Antelope Valley.

“In the wisdom of Ephesians 4:22,” Vince said, “we strive to put off our old self and be renewed in the Spirit, putting on the new self. This is our mentality for training in preparation for Saturday.”

In preparation, more specifically, for a Saturday night showdown with Golden State Athletic Conference rival Westmont College. In the Mustangs’ rear view, though, is a 3-2 loss Wednesday by scores of 22-25, 25-9, 23-25, 25-13 and 15-11.

Mustang Kayla Sims tallied 50 assists and Kylie Brown had a team-high 11 kills, but the Pioneers (8-5) were seemingly always one step ahead.

“We had a great effort tonight against a very scrappy, and aggressive opponent,” Vince said. “UAV had a hand on almost every ball, and as frustrating as that can be, the ladies stayed together and kept unity as the priority.”

Rebecca Davis had seven kills for the Mustangs (2-6), while Jane Cisar had six. Davis added 33 digs, while Mackenzie Delo had 34.

“As always,” Vince said, “I am proud of these Lady Mustangs.”

Saturday’s match on The Master’s Bross Court starts at 7 p.m.
