Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station are investigating a break-in at a Newhall liquor store Thursday morning. In addition to the break-in, broadcast cable wires for a neighboring community access television station were cut.
Jarnail Singh, owner of Dooly’s Liquor & Market, which is located on the corner of 14th Street and Railroad Avenue in Newhall, said he received a nervous call from an employee early Thursday morning telling him he needed to go to the store.
Singh’s employee said, “‘doors are open and looks like someone’s here.’”
“She called the cops,” he added.
Singh said he believes the suspect or suspects broke in through the roof.
“It looks like they cut the roof open and got in that way,” he said. “(They) took my safe, took pretty much all the cash from the office. Didn’t take any lottery tickets. Didn’t take any liquor. Lucky no one got hurt. Money, you can replace that.”
Lieutenant Leo Bauer from the SCV Sheriff’s Station said several wires on the roof were cut and the store was getting dusted for fingerprints.
In addition to the break-in, lines from the neighboring SCVTV station were also cut, which interrupted broadcasts on Channel 20.
“We suspect the same people who broke into the liquor store last night also cut our Spectrum broadcast lines,” said SCVTV Production Manager Jessica Boyer. “We are working with city and Sheriff’s officials, as well as Spectrum officials, to fix the lines and resume broadcasting as soon as possible.”
SCVTV televises local content 24/7 on both Spectrum channel 20, AT&T U-Verse Channel 99, and all of SCVTV’s content is also available on demand at scvtv.com, Boyer added. The station’s feed to AT&T U-Verse is still active.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the SCV Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121.
