The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the Newhall School District Visual Arts Program, recently unveiled a new Common Spaces: Art in Public Places display at the Community Wall located at Westfield Valencia Town Center. The exhibit, “Representing Student Artists of the Newhall School District,” will be on display through Nov. 21.
“Our community is blessed to have a wealth of artistic talent and the City of Santa Clarita is dedicated to providing opportunities for the growing arts community to thrive,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “The Arts in Public Places exhibits are a great way to showcase local artist’s creations in prominent areas throughout Santa Clarita.”
The Representing Student Artists of the Newhall School District exhibit highlights a collection of artwork from students who participated in the 2012 Newhall School District Art Show. Featured student artists range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade.
The Newhall School District Visual Arts program provides arts education and skills development at all 10 district schools, where art is integrated with other areas of curriculum. As a result of the district’s visual arts program, students learn about artists and different art movements while developing techniques and technical skills using a variety of art media.
In addition to the new exhibit on display at the Community Wall, two other exhibitions are available around town as part of the Common Spaces: Art in Public Places program. These exhibits include: “Beauty is a Bridge: The River Bridges of the Santa Clarita Valley,” which is featured in the Small Space, Big Stories Gallery at Town Center and includes images of every river bridge in the Santa Clarita Valley. The “Congressional Art Competition 2012: An Artistic Discover” is on display at the Town Center Art Space, which is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, representing 20 art pieces from selected high school students within each congressional district across the nation. Of the 20 pieces featured in the exhibit, one wining artwork piece has been selected to be on display in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol in summer 2013.
