The Newhall School District and Measure E committee have received the endorsement of a cross section of political and business support this week.
U.S. Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, state Sen. Sharon Runner, Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Democratic Alliance for Action have all pledged their support to the school district and community for Measure E.
The $60 million bond initiative will be on the November ballot and, if passed, will supply the necessary funds to upgrade all ten schools in the Newhall District as well as restore the historic auditorium at Newhall Elementary School.
Terri Crain, president and CEO of the SCV Chamber, said the measure would be beneficial to both the community and schools.
“Upgrades to the schools are necessary and the renovation of the auditorium for public use will be a huge addition to the community,” she said.
Residents of the Newhall School community will not see an increase in taxes, as Measure E will just extend Measure K, the bond passed in 1999.
“No increase on an individual’s tax bill is so important in these economic times,” Crain added.
The school district board of trustees voted to place Measure E on ballot after reaching out to the community for input. Improvements include repairing and replacing deteriorated roofs, lighting and electrical systems, improving energy efficiency, upgrading technology in the classrooms, science labs and libraries, and restoring the 1941 WPA built auditorium for large groups and fine arts programming.
