With the entry of the so-called Millennial generation into the job market, for the first time the workforce includes people from five generations. At the Valley Industry Association’s June keynote luncheon, the focus will be on effective communication that spans generational boundaries.
With a presentation titled “Understanding and Leveraging Generational Diversity in the Workplace,” Dr. Dianne Van Hook, chancellor of College of the Canyons, will outline the importance of each generation’s role in today’s workplace, and how good communication can improve efficiency within businesses. The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., June 17 at the Valencia Country Club.
“Historically there have been three, maybe four, generations present in the workplace at any one time, whereas now there is a broader spectrum, meaning more variety in work styles and methods,” VIA President and CEO Kathy Norris said. “Having a fuller understanding of how to communicate effectively across generational lines can have a very positive impact on a company’s efficiency.”
By 2020, Millennials – in general, researchers include those born between the early 1980s to the early 2000s – will comprise more than one in three adult Americans, and by 2025 they will make up as much as 75 percent of the U.S. workforce, according to a recent Brookings report.
“Dr. Van Hook has an excellent perspective and a wealth of wisdom,” Norris said. “Professionals from every level – and every generation – will find something helpful to take away from this lunch.”
Reservations are required for the luncheon. Members who reserve by Thursday, June 5, pay $40, or $45 between June 6-12. After June 12, the cost is $50. The cost for non-members is $65. “No shows” or cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will be billed. There is a $10 surcharge for attendees without a reservation. The Valencia Country Club is located at 27330 N. Tourney Road. The luncheon is sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita, Poole and Shaffery, Mellady Direct Marketing, SCVTV, KHTS AM-1220 and The Signal. Reservations can be made by visiting www.VIA.org/Calendar or calling the VIA office at (661) 294-8088.
