Despite a relentless defense that held the No. 18 in the state Chaminade Eagles to just 62 yards of total offense in the first half, the Valencia Vikings could not hold on in a 14-10 loss Friday night at Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium.

Valencia’s defense held Chaminade’s speedy running back Terrell Newby to 78 yards on the ground, but his two second half touchdown plunges of one and three yards was the difference in the game. Last week Newby ran for 279 yards and five touchdowns.
The difference was the first drive of the second half for Chaminade (2-0). After Valencia (0-2) took a 7-0 lead into the locker room, the Viking’s Aaron Dominguez pinned Kevin Lewallyn on the three-yard line after the second half kickoff. On the very next play, Eagles’ quarterback Logan Scott ran 58 yards to the Valencia 39. That key play seemed to breathe life into Chaminade’s offense. Eight plays later Newby scored from a yard out, and after the two-point conversion the Eagles had the lead 8-7.
But the Vikings marched right back. On the ensuing drive, Brett Schreiber kicked a 41-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 10-8 lead.
But behind the legs of Scott and Newby, the Eagles were able to control the ball and the clock in the fourth quarter, with Newby’s second touchdown giving the Eagles the lead they would hold.
Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy finished the game 14 of 18 for 111 yards. He scored the Valencia touchdown on a one-yard run. Tedric Thompson caught six passes for 47 yards and freshman Jay Jay Wilson hauled in five passes for 47 yards. Cody Anciano was the Vikings leading ground gainer with 38 yards.
Chaminade’s Logan Scott was 4 for 4 passing for 14 yards, but ran for 111. The Vikings sacked Scott five times in the game.
