No damage has been reported from a 3.9 earthquake in the Newhall area Sunday, according to officials.
The earthquake was epicentered about four miles east/esoutheast of Newhall, according to Dr. Egill Hauksson, a seismologist at CalTech. There were five smaller quakes that followed the 3.9 shake, he said. Those quakes were relatively minor, ranging in magnitude from 1.8 to 2.5 on the Richter scale.
While it’s impossible to predict future seismic activity, Hauksson said that there’s only a 1-in-20 chance that a follow-up earthquake would be larger at this point.
“I’ve got people checking out the facilities, and we’ve had no damage reported,” said Sgt. Ron Price of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Deputies are just now completing their critical facilities checks,” Price said.
“Our haunted jail is still going on as scheduled,” he added.
Today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., deputies are asking the community to help them look for ghosts and goblins spotted in and around a “haunted” station jail. The location of the haunted jailhouse is 23740 Magic Mountain Parkway..
There will also be a Halloween Costume contest for the children in attendance. Trophies will be awarded for each age category.
The age categories and times of the contests are as follows: Under 2 will be judged at 12:30 pm, Ages 2 to 4 at 1 p.m., Ages 5 to 7 at 1:30 p.m.; ages 8 to 10 at 2 p.m.; ages 11 to 12 at 2:30 p.m.; and ages 13 to Adults at 3 p.m.
