Joe Stoddard will demonstrate watercolor at the Monday, Nov. 18 meeting of the Santa Clarita Artists Association (SCAA).
This event is free, open to the public and meets at 6:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, located at 23630 Valencia Blvd.
Stoddard’s work is about documentation, interpretation and process. He paints and sketches architecture, landscapes and urban subjects. Finished works consist of urban scenes done in pencil, pen, watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel. Paintings have the feel of a loose sketch, done on location, with notes and scribbles about the experience as part of the art. Some works are collages consisting of a painting with adjacent color and value studies and a typewritten description of the time and place. Masking tape and pencil guidelines organize the elements, creating a handmade grid reminiscent of paste-up art boards from the early days. Gesso is used to create texture and to lightly obscure some of the elements. Collages are done on cradled hardboard art panels and are unframed and finished with an acrylic varnish.
He has produced paintings for a number of Pasadena events, including the Bungalow Heaven Annual Tour, the Colorado Street Bridge Party, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, the California Art Club Artists for Architecture Painting Project, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. His work has been featured in the The Art of Watercolor, a French art magazine as well as Studios magazine, and Watercolor Artist magazine. His studio was featured in The Man Cave Book.
Stoddard’s paintings have also been on the covers of a variety of publications including Westways Magazine, Pasadena Magazine, a book series published by the Historical Society of Southern California, and the Lost and Found Series by Many Moons Press. In 2001 a book of his sketches entitled Pasadena Sketchbook was published. The second edition was published in October of 2008. A collection of sketches of the University of Redlands entitled Redlands Sketchbook was published in 2007. Walter Foster Publishing published Expressive Color, a painting instruction book in August of 2008. In 2018 he completed a new book for Quarto Publishing entitled Expressive Painting.
