After a successful show at the Downtown Los Angeles headquarters of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in October, the College of the Canyons music department will present a second “Electronica Musique & Multi-Media” show on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Black Box Theatre.

The free concert will feature the innovative sounds of COC students enrolled in various music courses, such as Music 142 (Electronic Music Production) and Music 146 (Electronic Music for the Stage), which will be juxtaposed with the movements of COC dance students.

“Audiences should expect to enter a dream-like environment where lights, video, and live dancing will all blend to create an otherworldly experience,” said Dr. Bernardo Feldman, chair of the college’s music department.

Some students will perform as DJs, transforming computer-generated sounds into rhythmic textures, while others will create dream-like landscapes through the layered sounds of traditional instruments, sophisticated electronics, and vocals.

Under the artful guidance of professor Phylise Smith, members of the COC dance department will be incorporating elements of free improvisation, brilliantly combining ballet techniques, modern dance movement and hip hop.

“By combining the visual elements of dance and video, the music finds the ideal complement to involve the visual senses and thus, to transport the spectator to a magical place,” added Feldman.

Once considered an obscure type of music, electronic music has quickly become a form of mainstream sonic expression with an ever-increasing market and with numerous fans that share their music through new media.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public.
