The Pitchess Detention Center and other Los Angeles County jails are closed to visitors this weekend while officials conduct security assessments of visitor areas.
The lockout follows the escape of an inmate at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles on Friday. Sheriff officials said the man “breached security in the visiting area” at the downtown L.A. Jail and assaulted multiple sheriff’s deputies.
“The inmate ran out of Men’s Central Jail through the visiting area. Jail deputies went in foot pursuit of the inmate, assisted by perimeter patrol car jail deputies. He was captured by jail deputies at Rosabell St. near Vignes St, Los Angeles.
“The inmate injured himself when he fell off a wall and from trying to climb through some barbed wire. He was treated at an area hospital. The deputies received minor injuries.
“Visiting area video showed that only one inmate escaped. Downtown L.A. jail facilities were placed on lockdown and a verification wristband count and security check were completed.”
As a result, “a comprehensive security assessment of all Los Angeles County jail visiting areas is underway,” officials said. “As a result, there will be no visiting in person or via video” at Men’s Central Jail, Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Century Regional Detention Facility, and the Pitchess Detention Center.
Initially planned to run through Saturday, the security assessments were extended through Sunday.
Attorney and consulate visits can still take place.
