The three Providence Health & Services hospitals in the San Fernando Valley were named today among the top 5 percent of hospitals across the nation for quality patient outcomes.

Providence Holy Cross, Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana medical centers earned the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades’, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Healthgrades data show patients treated at hospitals receiving this award experience better outcomes.

This is the fifth year Providence Tarzana has earned the award and the fourth year for Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills and Providence Saint Joseph, Burbank. Fifty-three hospitals in California and 258 nationwide received this honor. The distinction places these hospitals in the top 5 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for excellence.

“One year is great, two is fantastic, but consistent results for four and five years is exemplary. It is a tribute to physicians, nurses and all our caregivers, all of whom have impacts on the quality care we provide our patients,” said Michael Bernstein, chief medical officer for Providence in Southern California.

Providence is guided by a tradition of excellence and compassionate care for the poor and vulnerable, and a spirit of expert-to-expert collaboration throughout its five-state system to constantly advance quality care. Nurses are encouraged to seek innovative practices at the bedside, conducting research to determine best practices.

From 2013 through 2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.2 percent lower risk of dying compared to those treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals 19 procedures and conditions, 160,322 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25 percent lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.

“Consumers are doing their research when it comes to selecting the hospital where they receive their care, and high-marks in quality are a valuable differentiator that can set organizations apart,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical hospital for Healthgrades. “We commend hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for demonstrating an unwavering commitment to high quality care for their patients.”

The 258 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2017 study period (2013-15), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
