Lashinda Demus

College of the Canyons track coach Lashinda Demus won her heat race in the 400 meter hurdles and advanced to the finals at the Summer Olympics in London.

Demus won her race in 54.08 seconds. She has the third-fastest qualifying time of the runners who advanced to Wednesday’s final. Demus is the 2011 world champion in the 400 meter hurdles.

Natalya Antyukh from Russia has the fastest qualifying time. She won her heat race in 53.33 seconds.

All three women from the United States qualified for the final race. T’Erea Brown qualified fifth in 54.21 seconds. Georganne Moline is the seventh-fastest qualifier at 54.74 seconds.

Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix advanced to the semifinals in the 200 meters. She won silver medals in the 200 in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

In men’s volleyball, the United States won its final match in group play, easily dismissing Tunisia in three games. Team USA, with Saugus High graduate David Smith, clinched the top seed in the Olympic tournament after going 4-1 in group play.

The United States plays Italy in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

In golf, Valencia High’s Alison Lee is second in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship after the first round at The Country Club in Cleveland.

Lee is two shots behind Lydia Ko of New Zealand. Ko shot a 6-under 66 on the first day of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

Lee was 4-under 68 after the first round. She had four birdies starting her day with a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur consists of two rounds of stroke play followed by a six-round match play championship. The 36-hole final is set for Sunday.

In auto racing, Alex Tagliani, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, was 10th in the Izod IndyCar Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Scott Dixon won the race, his fourth at Mid-Ohio in the past six years.

Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley was 20th in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Iowa Speedway. Despite the poor finish, Pursley maintained his lead in the West Series standings. He is seven points ahead of teammate Dylan Kwasniewski after 11 races.

In baseball, the Dodgers were shut out, 2-0, by the Colorado Rockies and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
