The Saugus girls cross country team added to its dominance by winning another CIF State championship at Woodward Park in Fresno.

The Saugus girls won their seventh state title in a row. Sophomore Samantha Ortega was the runner-up in the Division II race and five Saugus runners finished in the top 50.

Ortega completed the course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Heidi Hoslet was 21st in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. Abigail Frankian was 23rd, Katie Huntington was 35th and Olivia Altieri was 49th.

The girls scored 97 points and finished ahead of La Costa Canyon, which came in second with 108 points.

The Saugus boys team finished second in the Division II state meet. AJ Yarnall set a school record completing the course in 15 minutes, 10 seconds. He was second in the race.

The Saugus boys scored 97 points. Westlake won the Division II state championship with 84 points.

Golden Valley’s Bianca Tinoco, competing as an individual, finished in seventh place in the girls Division II race.

Nolan Del Valle from Golden Valley was 15th in the Division II boys race.

In high school football, Valencia lost to Palos Verdes, 50-33, in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs, a game heard live on AM 1220, KHTS.

It was the fourth time in the past five years that the Vikings have lost in the semifinals.

Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy threw three touchdown passes in the game and set the school record for touchdowns passes in a season. He threw 38 touchdown passes in his senior season.

In college football, it was not a good day for either UCLA or USC.

UCLA lost to Stanford, 35-17, in a match-up of top 15 teams at the Rose Bowl. The two teams will meet again on Friday night in the Pac-12 championship game.

Across town at the Coliseum, USC lost to No. 1 ranked Notre Dame, 22-13. The Trojans lost four of their last five games.

Notre Dame meanwhile completed an undefeated 12-0 regular season and earned a spot in the BCS championship game.
