Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation (AB 1559) sponsored by Board of Equalization Member George Runner and fellow BOE members that gives the BOE authority to extend emergency tax relief up to three months in the event of a disaster.
“The last thing people should worry about during a tragedy is taxes,” said BOE Member Runner. “This extension will provide much-needed relief to those who have been affected by the recent fires and other emergencies.”
Before the signing of AB 1559, the BOE could provide a one-month extension for tax payments and relieve any related payment penalties for those affected by tragedy.
AB 1559 extends that period to up to three months, provided the taxpayer files a request for relief before or within the allotted time frame.
As an urgency measure, the law takes effect immediately. Taxpayers affected by the Erskine, Sand, Trailhead and Blue Cut wildfires are eligible to file for emergency tax relief.
George Runner represents more than nine million Californians as an elected member of the State Board of Equalization. For more information, visit www.boe.ca.gov/Runner.
