1925 - By letter, Wyatt Earp beseeches his friend William S. Hart to portray him in a movie, to correct the "lies about me." Hart never did. [story]
Hart-Wyatt Earp

City Council members voted 5-0 Tuesday evening to file a legal brief in support of the federal government’s lawsuit against California’s “sanctuary state” laws.

Tuesday’s meeting saw more than 130 speakers voicing their opinions for and against the move to force state and local law enforcement agencies to report criminal aliens to immigration officials prior to their release from prison.

There were also 442 resident emails supporting the City Council’s action to oppose California’s law and 63 emails in opposition of the Council’s motion, according to Councilman Cameron Smyth.

The meeting lasted more than 7 hours and ended just after 1:10 a.m.

“If nothing else it tells Sacramento there’s one town in this state that doesn’t go along with this and I’ll make that a motion as to how we proceed this evening,” said Councilman Bob Kellar.

“I want America to be strong. To be strong, you’re just going to have to find some compromise and stop fighting with each other. you gotta start caring for each other,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “This discussion we’re having here tonight belonged in Washington D.C…. but we are here to make some policy and at least let those thoughts be known. They have failed to bring immigration policy to something rational in the 21st century.

“Our greatest concern at all times, at all times, is keeping you safe,” Weste added. “I can’t believe that anyone, on any side of this issue, wants criminals to harm their friends or their family, and I don’t care where you come from, or who you are, or what your race is — I can’t believe anyone wants that.”

Both Weste and Kellar recalled the death of Deputy David March, who was shot and killed April 29, 2002. March was killed by a Mexican citizen who has been deported multiple times and had said he wanted to kill a police officer during a traffic stop.

At issue was Senate Bill 54, the California Values Act. The legislation repealed prior state law requiring law enforcement agencies to notify federal immigration authorities of drug-related arrests involving non-U.S. citizens. It also prohibits law enforcement from sharing information and release dates of individuals arrested, detained or convicted of a misdemeanor that was previously a felony.

SB 54 does not extend to criminal aliens who have been convicted of a serious or violent felony; convicted of a misdemeanor or felony within the past five years; or have been convicted within the past 15 years of specific non-violent felonies. They are still reported to federal authorities prior to the end of their sentences.

Before SB 54, there were no limitations crimes that triggered federal notification.

  1. Excellent work Santa Clarita Council!
    ???

  2. Shocker!! They cite an incident where one illegal immigrant killed a cop. Sure wish they’d be as passionate about white males who continue to terrorize this country.

    • William Reel says:

And the “special kind of stupid” award goes to you.?????? People like you are actually amongst us. Wow?

    • John Chan says:

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, a longer list can be provided.

    • “Illegal immigrant” is not a race. Good job showing your true, racist colors.

    • Zach says:

Yes, because white males are responsible for all the “terrorism”, the vast majority of violent crime in America.

      From decidedly Leftist CNN:
(CNN)Notable terror attacks with fatalities on US soil since 9/11:

September 11, 2001 – Nineteen al Qaeda members hijack four US passenger airliners. Two are flown into the Twin Towers in New York, one crashes into the Pentagon and another crashes into the Pennsylvania countryside after passengers attempt to wrest control of the aircraft to prevent an attack on the US Capitol. At the World Trade Center site 2,753 people are killed; 184 at the Pentagon; and 40 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A total of 2,977 people are killed.

November 5, 2009 – Major Nidal Malik Hasan kills 13 people and one unborn child and injures 32 at Fort Hood, Texas, during a shooting rampage. He is convicted and sentenced to death. Hasan is not charged with terrorism, but the rampage is considered by many to be a terror incident.
April 15, 2013 – Twin bomb blasts explode near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three and wounding at least 264. One suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is killed in an encounter with police. His brother, suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is captured and charged with one count of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death and one count of malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device resulting in death. He is given the death penalty on June 25, 2015.

July 16, 2015 – Mohammad Abdulazeez opens fire on a military recruiting center and a Navy reserve facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four US Marines and a Navy sailor. FBI Director James Comey later says Abdulazeez’s actions were “motivated by foreign terrorist organization propaganda,” adding that it’s difficult to determine which terrorist group may have inspired him.

December 2, 2015 – Married couple Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik open fire on a holiday party taking place at Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people. Investigators believe the couple was self-radicalized.

June 12, 2016 – Omar Mateen, an American-born man who’d pledged allegiance to ISIS, kills 49 people and wounds others in a shooting spree at a gay nightclub in Orlando, the second-deadliest mass shooting in recent US history and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11.
October 31, 2017 – Eight people are killed and almost a dozen injured when a 29-year-old man in a rented pickup truck drives down a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in New York. The suspect has been identified as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. Authorities found a note near the truck used in the incident, claiming the attack was made in the name of ISIS, a senior law enforcement official said.

December 11, 2017 – Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, sets off a homemade pipe bomb he is wearing in a walkway below Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York. It detonates only partially, and only Ullah is seriously injured. Five other people have minor injuries. Ullah had pledged allegiance to ISIS, officials say.

      ————-

Lots of “white men” involved in those terrorist events, aren’t there?

ALL murders are evil, no matter the race of the perpetrator or victim. But to assert that “white men” are “the problem” is not only ignorant of the statistics (easily available if you do a simple search) but promotes a dangerous narrative that we should overlook crime being brought into the United States by some illegal immigrants by prohibiting local, state, and federal agencies from implementing crime-prevention measures. This is what SB54 is about. Politicians on the Left ONLY want “Sanctuary States” and “Sanctuary Cities” for ONE reason: to get the votes of immigrants, especially Hispanics, so they can stay in office and remain in power. They don’t give a RIP about “immigrant’s rights.” They use immigrants as pawns to stay in office, laughing behind closed doors at how pathetically ignorant they are. Don’t be one of their tools. If you sincerely care about immigrants to our nation there are LOTS of productive things you can do and ought to be doing. Supporting idiotic and illegal “Sanctuary” laws is not one of them. Arm yourself with facts, not feelings.

  3. Anyone who dislikes this is an idiot for sure , we don’t need sanctuary state laws or cities here .

  4. Proud of you Santa Clarita ❤️????

  5. Terrible. Santa Clarita was born of immigrants.
Working the fields of onions, carrots, corn.
Immigrants built the city. You are all heartless people. But, immigrants are here to stay. Don’t worry, they will break their backs so you can eat you fluffy salad or yoyr chocolate covered strawberries that they worked so hard to pick in 115 degree weather or even if it’s raining. I know, i worked the fields. Here in Santa Clarita. I can go on and on to tell you the history of S.C. but I’m just wasting my breath.
I hope you can sleep at night with you heartless decision.

  6. Cyndi Barber says:

Wow! This speaks volumes! What a sad thing.

  7. Great job Santa Clarita! It’s time we cooperate with the Federal Government and protect our citizens

  8. When I would see stuff like this on the news I felt proud to live in the city that I thought wasn’t like that. I thought we were better than that but I guess not. racism is everywhere unfortunately. Sad times to live in we don’t learn from past history what a shame.

  9. Glad to hear the vote. Crime should go down, homeless people will be less and the safety of all the “legal” residence of the SCV will be safe! The SCV is a great place to live.

    • Homeless people should be less??? That’s a joke, most of the homeless i see in this valley are white men and women… a lot of the crime here are white men and women. A “white Santa Clarita doesn’t = safety! Let’s get realistic here!

    • What an ignorant thing to say! “Homeless should be less”!! Some nerve!!!

    • Judy Vasquez Robledo right?!?! As if the homeless here are only “illegals” I can’t.. it’s this mindset that is definitely NOT going to “Make America Great” I’m mortified…

    • It’s disgusting!! What makes America great is the diversity in its people. God help us!!

    • Most homeless people I see begging for change are white. ??

    • This issue has absolutely nothing to do with homelessness. Have you talked to even one homeless person in this valley? I agree with Lindsay above, most of our valley’s homeless are white. From what I have observed, families from other countries take in their sick and aging. Extended families live together providing support for the babies, working, and aging. Thinking this vote will keep you safe is wishful thinking. Much of our crime is due to people with drug problems trying to get money. That also has nothing to do with a person’s immigration status. As a Newhall native, the hateful comments from the council meeting and online, make me sad. This separation was not part of this valley when I was growing up.

    • Andy Arriaga says:

The homeless problem won’t go away until you tell your people to stop doing meth

    • Lindsay Tavano Banuelos if I’m not mistaken the homeless will be less, it’s because the homeless would be able get the help they need like jobs. Jobs should go to legal US citizens.

    • Andy Arriaga your people ?? all nationalities do drugs ??

    • Lindsay Tavano Banuelos you guys kill me lol, I don’t think she meant alot of the homeless were mexicans, I think she meant they will deporting the illegals there would be more jobs for legal US citizens. Its sad that illegals are put before legal citizens. AND what sad as well is you guys are sounding so racist.

    • But “illegal” immigrants take jobs that no one else takes… They’re not “taking our jobs”. ???

  10. Even if you think we should have open borders, you have absolutely zero legal ground to stand on. If California can ignore immigration laws, why can’t other states ignore laws that liberals like? You’re opening a can of worms and you don’t even realize it because liberals are typically shortsighted

  11. God bless you guys ! And really really thank you ??

  12. Happy to live in a city that abides by the Federal Law

  13. The key word missing here is “illegal”. LEGAL immigration is still intact.

  14. What a joke to think this stops the homeless being put on buses from cold states. I knew the mormons run santa clarita I didn’t think they are so racist.

  15. I say if u have been here for along time , 20yrs plus , stay , its the new illegals that need to go , they come and take our benefits away from us and they have respect for this country , they take away from people who really need help , and they wont learn English

  16. Now its truly Awesometown.

  17. “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” — Sinclair Lewis

  18. Listening to those who were for sanctuary state they totally missed the argument. Immigrants are different then ILLEGAL CRIMINAL immigrants who are protected under Californias sanctuary status. I just wanted to know if these people had walls and gates with locks around their property and had doors and windows on their residences with an alarm system to keep criminals out….if so then why. They should allow anyone who commits crimes to come into their residence live with them and their kids and pay for all their expenses and protect them so ICE cant deport them. And the business owner who was for these illegal criminals to be protected I wonder who he has hired to work at his business . And for those who are playing the race card it has nothing to do with race. It’s about the laws of our country no matter where they are from….we just want them to come in the legal way through the front door.

  19. John Whitlaw says:

So glad we joined in on this great job Santa Clarita

  20. No surprise from the proud racists. But ashamed of the unabashed racism from many of the residents of SCV.
    https://youtu.be/p7JrJ2nOJqw

  21. Fantastic, great job SCV! ??????

  22. Thank God! (Prayers do work!) ❤️??

  23. Stacy Grover says:

    I am so embarrassed.

  24. cbrown says:

Reagan was the only president in recent history that helped illegal immigrants by enacting not one but two amnesty bills. He was conscious that our involvement in Latin America contributed to the conditions in those Countries and it is still true today. The real problem is the world is overpopulated. No one wants to address this because the more people the more consumers. It is an irony that the same people that are anti-abortion anti-birth control are the same people that want to turn away illegal children. We as a nation over consume and we are the main contributors to the destruction of many nations around the world. In South America thousands of acres of natural habitat are being torn down to grow crops that are then exported to the U.S. this and many other self serving actions around the world are causing immigration and many other problems. We need to stop overconsumption, in my block there are only three of us that use our garage to park cars, most of my neighbors have garages stuffed with useless junk, because they cant fit anymore in their homes.

  25. Go tell this to the people
Cutting your veggies on the fields.
People washing your fruit at the store so looks good to eat.
    People washing your cars.
    People serving your food.
People cleaning after you done eating.
People cutting your grass so your house looks nice.
People cleaning your house so looks nice inside.
    People.
People taking care of your grandma or grandpa at a old people home.
    People at your favorite restaurant.
And after you tell all those people all that negative stuff than seat and eat or whatever they do for you in front of them.

  26. Rick Dalton says:

Illegal immigration is a crime and is destroying our country’s infrastructure while punishing legal immigrants obeying the law, no nation on earth has open borders, build the wall

  27. Michael Jean says:

Santa Clarita is full to the brim of rich, spoiled white folks.

  28. Why does it always have to be called RACISM. Why can’t it just be for the protection of the community we live in. Stop playing the poor victim every time something does not go your way.

  29. Sammy says:

As an immigrant, I applaud the council representing my city for doing this. Those who appose need to stop saying it’s racist, immigrants are not welcomed. It’s none of that. It’s as simple as, breaking a law. Any law. Entering any country in the world with out legal documents, be it a visa, or some permit, is illegal. Therefore it needs to be addressed. No country has closed borders. All allow visitors and those seeking residence. They just have to go through a process. Even those seeking asylum have to go through a process. I went through one and here I am. Yes it was a long time ago but everyone’s case is different.

  30. The City Counsels Agenda report is missing the second page. Can you please update the post with all information. Thank you!

  31. Cathy Frey says:

Nashville too! We will vote the f***ers out

  32. Rudy Perez says:

My dear friends that don’t agree. I’m an immigrant to this amazing country. We left our country because there were to many criminals victimizing our families, the government over reaching their power, no jobs, the lack of first responders etc. “Santuary Cities” are a false sense of safety which turn our cities into places where criminals victimize our citizens because there is less active policing.

  33. Dave Rickmers says:

Lordy! The bots are arguing amongst themselves. Good to get the prejudice in writing. Heck of a move on same day as Sessions’ “You’re own fault” speech, announcing that we seize children at rhe border and jail the adults until trials. What did Jesus say about refugees?

  34. Cris says:

Be careful for what you ask for…

One thing this did was to separate the residents of this town..
    Nice job!!!!

Should have left well enough alone.
It could end up just adding to the homeless population when the bread winner is gone.

  35. Lorie Troullier says:

So proud to say that I am a resident of SCV since 1987, raised 4 kids now successful adults safely in this town. And I am so proud of Ms. Laurene Weste our mayor, who handled that explosive meeting with such grace, calmness and fairness. I would vote for her again and again!

  36. Jeff Einbund says:

Sanctuary State BS ?. Can’t wait for Jerry Brown to go‼️

  37. Praise the Lord! Proud of our City Council!

    • Emma—- yup. The Lord doesn’t like them poor colored people coming into town. Why, he even drove them out of the Temple with a whip!
Wait—- that was the moneychangers. Jesus was cool with the poor and needy. Too bad his followers aren’t.

  38. This is great news, thank you Santa Clarita..

  39. Thank you City Council! You are giving our family a reason to stay in this State for a while!

  40. Thanks for doing the right thing for the citizens of SC

  41. So glad I’m no SCVer anymore…
