In a scene reminiscent of a fatal collision two years ago on Bouquet Canyon Road, two husband-and-wife cyclists from Valencia were injured Saturday morning in Lancaster when a minivan careened out of control and slammed into their cycling group.

The couple was transported to a nearby hospital where the husband was listed in critical condition with a head wound. The wife was in stable condition with moderate injuries. Both were wearing helmets.

The names of the injured cyclists were not available Saturday evening. Both were in their 30s, a Sheriff official said.

The collision occurred at approximately 8 a.m., but the information was not released to the press until Saturday night. Both riders were alive Sunday at 1 a.m., but no further update on their condition was immediately available.

The couple was participating in a group ride of about 20 cyclists, organized by a Lancaster bicycle shop.

Lancaster Sheriff’s Sgt. Maggie Lane said a call placed from someone on Division Street at 8:06 a.m. altered deputies to the collision.

Recounting the sequence of events, Lane said most of the cycling group had made it through a sweeping turn from Avenue L onto northbound 4th Street East, which turns into Division Street. Two riders – the Valencia couple – stayed behind, waiting for opposing traffic to clear.

For reasons not yet known, a PT cruiser slammed into a minivan as it was crossing through the intersection. The force of the collision pushed the minivan into the two cyclists.

It was July 2009 when a somewhat similar incident unfolded on a rural stretch of Bouquet Canyon Road in the Santa Clarita Valley. In that instance, a drunk driver slammed his pickup truck into a group of cyclists from the Santa Clarita Velo club, killing 43-year-old Joseph Novotny of Stevenson Ranch.
