The National Weather Service has extended its excessive heat warning through 8 p.m. Thursday as triple-digit temperatures continue to broil the Santa Clarita Valley.
The NSW predicts maximum temperatures ranging from 97ºF to 107ºF, with Thursday the hottest.
Overnight minimum temperatures will be in the 70s, but possibly as high as 80ºF.
The excessive heat warning also covers Ventura County coastal and inland valleys; the San Gabriel Valley; the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area; and the San Fernando Valley through Thursday night.
The elevated temperatures increase the risk of serious heat-related illnesses, especially for the young and elderly, those performing outdoor activities, as well as those without access to air conditioning. There’s also increased potential for power outages.
Instructions
Never, ever, leave people or pets in enclosed vehicles, even for a short period of time.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency – call 911.
