1910 - Newhall (Auto) Tunnel opens, bypassing Beale's Cut [story]
Newhall Tunnel

Open auditions will be held for the Canyon Theatre Guild production of “White Christmas” on September 8 and 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

This is the first time this show is being produced in our area and will be directed by Greg and Patti Finley, choreographed by Musette Caing, with vocal direction by Virginia Stewart. All roles are open.

A description of the parts follows:

Leads:

Bob Wallace – late 20’s to mid 30’s; singing star in a song & dance team – crooning style singing; Baritone; should move very well. Phil Davis – late 20’s to mid 30’s; fun-loving partner in a song  and dance team; boyish charm; bari-tenor; should be strong dancer (jazz and tap a plus) good comic timing.

Betty Haynes – mid to late 20’s; The sensible half of an upcoming song & dance team; a female singer of quiet beauty & charm with a rich chest mix sound and a soprano extension.  Must move well.

Judy Haynes – early 20’s; Betty’s younger sister and the other half of their song and dance team; wholesome yet sexy; strong jazz and tap; Chest mix – a major Song-and-dance performer.

General Henry Waverly – late 50’s to mid-60’s; retired U.S. Army General struggling to run an inn in Vermont.  Beneath his curmudgeonly exterior is a warm, compassionate man.  Non-singing role, with the exception of one line.

Martha Watson – late 40’s to mid 60’s; once a Broadway star, she is now the general’s housekeeper at the Inn.  Dry, wry, wisecracking sense of humor.  A winning, appealing character-comedienne with big belt voice.

Supporting:

Ralph Sheldrake – mid to late 30’s; Army buddy of Bob & Phil’s, now an executive with the Ed Sullivan Show; fast-talking New Yorker; baritone.

Rita and Rhoda – mid 30’s to early 30’s; Bob & Phil’s two star chorus girls; brash, sexy, and fun – maybe not the smartest.

Ezekiel Foster – mid 40’s – late 50’s; the ultimate taciturn New Englander; helps out at the Inn and takes life at a very slow pace.

Mike – mid 20’s – late 30’s; Bob & Phil’s stage manager; over-dramatic & hysterical, but gets things done.

There is one child’s role,  Susan Waverly – 9 – 12 years old to play 9 years old.  The General’s granddaughter; loveable & outgoing “real” kid; smart, wise beyond her years she is the ultimate child performer.  Excellent belt voice and able to move well.

Several ensemble roles, including:

Tessie – Bob & Phil’s very competent assistant.

Jimmy – owner of a non-too-classy nightclub

Cigarette Girl; Snoring Man & Mrs. Snoring Man; Train Conductor; Dance Captain; Seamstress; Ed Sullivan announcer; Male and Female ensemble of dancers in their early 20’s to Mid 30’s.  Should be able to dance ballroom, jazz, and tap (however if you don’t tap, we will teach you).  All should sing well.  Over the course of the show, the ensemble will play: Jimmy’s Back Room Clubgoers; Train Passengers/Inn Guests; Chorus Kids; Patrons of the Regency Room (in other words, the ensemble will be very busy).

Come to the audition prepared to sing approximately 16 bars of a traditional show tune.  Bring your own accompaniment tracks. No a capella singing. Wear shoes you can dance in, please.  No audition appointment needed, just come between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. either day. You will sing, dance and read.  Callbacks will be Sunday evening and/or Tuesday evening (Sept. 11).  Be familiar with the singing, dancing and acting styles of the 1950’s Hollywood movie musical.
