By now it seems most local residents know “American Sniper,” up for six Academy Awards, was partially filmed in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Less talked about is “Whiplash,” which is up for five.

Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and starring Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Melissa Benoist, “Whiplash” tells the story of an aspiring drummer whose hard-driving mentor challenges him to reach his potential. It was filmed throughout Newhall and the Valencia Industrial Center (and other parts of Los Angeles and New York).

On Sunday, “Whiplash” picked up two awards from the International Press Academy at its 19th annual Satellite Awards event in L.A.

J.K. Simmons, who plays the mentor, was named best actor in a supporting role. (He previously won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG and other awards for the same role.)

Thomas Curley, Ben Wilkins, Craig Mann won for best sound editing and mixing. (They previously won the BAFTA Award for “Whiplash.” BAFTA is the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.)

“American Sniper” was up for two awards Sunday – for film editing (SCV residents Gary Roach and Joel Cox) and best adapted screenplay (Jason Hall) – but went home empty-handed.

The International Press Academy is a global association of professional entertainment journalists in print, broadcast and digital media.
