Salt Lake City, Utah — Held to just one shot on goal, The Master’s College men’s soccer team opened the 2014 season Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the University of Great Falls on the first day of the Westminster Kickoff Classic.
Coach Jim Rickard’s 24th squad was hoping to display a new-found offense against the Argos, however, all they could muster was that one shot that came off the foot of sophomore forward Lloyd Virgill (Guatemala City, Guatemala) at the 21:17 mark of the opening half. That attempt was blocked by Argo keeper Jose Pena who didn’t make a save the rest of the way although the Mustangs just missed on a couple of headers themselves.
His Mustang counterpart, Kyle Cunningham (Saugus, CA), was just as good, notching four saves. However, when he couldn’t stop a header by Jordan Byland off a corner kick with 2:58 remaining in the first half, the Argos had a lead that held up the rest of the way.
Commenting on the defeat, Rickard said, “We were really rusty and a little out of sync as far as speed of play and quality of passing. We did some good things but just missed one marking assignment and they punished us for it.”
Now, the Mustangs have a day off before completing play in Salt Lake City on Saturday when they face host Westminster. The Mustangs host Marymount in their home opener on Tuesday, August 26.
