THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 14 UCLA men’s tennis team dominated its spring season opener this weekend, capturing both doubles titles and earning runner-up honors in both singles draws at the 2016 Sherwood Collegiate Cup.
UCLA senior Karue Sell and junior Joseph Di Giulio downed Baylor’s Will Little and Jimmy Bendeck in the doubles championship match. In the consolation doubles final, sophomore Austin Rapp and junior Gage Brymer defeated Stanford’s Brandon Sutter and Roy Lederman.
After eking out a first-round win over Stanford’s Yale Goldberg and David Wilczynski, it was smooth sailing for second-seeded Sell and Di Giulio all the way to the final. The Bruin pair ousted cross-town rivals Jake De Vine and Tanner Smith, 6-2, in the quarterfinals before also handing a 6-2 loss to Stanford’s Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender in the semis.
In the championship match, Sell and Di Giulio sealed the deal with a 6-3 win over Little and Bendeck.
In singles play, Brymer fell in the final to Baylor’s Julien Lenz, 6-1, 6-3, while sophomore Martin Redlicki lost to Logan Smith of USC in straights in the consolation final.
The Bruins have a quick turnaround this week as they host USF at 1:00 p.m. PST on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. This weekend, the UCLA men’s and women’s tennis teams host the 2016 ITA Kick-off Weekend. The men will play SMU on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PST, and either Georgia Tech or New Mexico on Sunday.
