1852 - Acton gold mine owner & California Gov. Henry Tifft Gage born in New York [story]
Henry Gage

Santa Clarita officials are working to clean up a property known as The Greens in Valencia, which they’ve declared a public nuisance.

The vacant property near the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway in an otherwise upscale part of town reportedly has been frequented by transients, runaways and drug activity, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.

The city red-tagged the property at 25601 McBean Parkway, for the second time last month, said Joe Montes, city attorney for Santa Clarita.

santa-clarita-officials-deputies-work-fix-problems-greensThat effort was part of the procedure intended to declare the property a public nuisance, officials said.

“We’re starting an administrative nuisance abatement proceeding,” said Brian Hamblet of Burke, Williams & Sorensen, who was working on behalf of the city to address concerns.

“First, we need to make sure (the property owner) has been served with a notice that the property has been identified as a public nuisance,” said. “We need to give the owners a reasonable period of time to take care of the problem on their own.”

If issues on the property aren’t addressed, further action could be taken to prompt code enforcement, officials said.

The Greens in Valencia opened in the early 1990s as an upscale putting course, restaurant and pro golf shop.

In 2006, the property was purchased for $6 million by New York-based Brisam Valencia LLC, which planned to raze the bar and erect a seven-story, 200-room Sheraton hotel on the site, according to an SCVNews.com story (read story, see video here).

A fire burned the property for the first time in 2008, and the business has been closed since 2009, according to officials.

Brisam Valencia halted plans after the Santa Clarita Planning Commission granted approval for the project back in 2009.

greens110611lIn November 2011, a fire on the property prompted firefighters to put holes in the ceiling as part of their standard firefighter procedure.

However, after the fire was extinguished, residents repeatedly trespassed on the property near the Westfield Valencia Town Center by using the holes in the ceiling of the bar as an access point.

As a result of past reports and city concern, regular patrols are posted in the area to try and curtail any illicit activity on the property, said Deputy Regina Yost, zone leader for the Valencia area in the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit.

“It became known to deputies that the building had become a location used for illicit drug activity, and runaways and transients would frequent the area,” Yost said. “We would get calls from concerned citizens saying they had seen people trespassing on the property. That’s a concern for us because officials had already deemed the building uninhabitable.”

  1. I agree, they closed down and it seems that the city or property owner just decided not to put anything in its place.
The hotel should have taken it over for it’s guests.

  19. Torrey has it right, that place was a nuisance the day it opened. I like it better the way it is now. Kind of a Blade Runner meets Garden Channel vibe.

I remember my wife and I went there after it changed ownership (for the last time). There were literally crabs running around the greens. I was shocked. No clue how they got there.

Sorry to squash everyone’s hopes but I personally contacted the cheesecake factory via Facebook and they said there will be no cheesecake factory in Santa Clarita.

  50. Marisa Bueno says:

    How about a children’s museum?

  51. Nuisance : a person, thing, or situation that is annoying or that causes trouble or problems.

Very interesting post, seems bit offensive due to large amount of “public nuisance” businesses such as “Schooners” or any other bar frequented by local “tough guys”

  52. The Greens was a fun place to go with friends and family. We used to play golf and listen to the live bands. It’s really sad that it can’t be resurrected. I’m not sure why they closed but heard a hotel was supposed to be put up in it’s place. I say bring back The Greens.

  59. A restaurant that doesn’t suck would be nice. Or something fun and reasonably priced would be nice. But since it’s scv that’s not going to happen.

  60. How about a splash park for kids

  61. Splash park!!! Awesome idea!

  62. The red dot in that’s in castaic

  63. Dillon Lutza says:

The greens was my childhood. When my dad wanted to catch a game and I wanted to play actual challenging mini golf that didn’t seem like a course designed by 5 year olds we went! The place was fantastic with such a great vibe. If that building wasn’t just a burned up outer shell I would be extremely interested in getting a group of investors to back me and re open the gimme grill and the greens the right way.

  64. Haha damn good times lol Adan Garcia

  65. Put in a Cheesecake Factory

  66. Sara Brown says:

We miss The Greens. It was so nice to bring the kids during the day and a great date night without the kids.

  67. I like the splash pad idea :)

  68. What happened to the Sheraton that allegedly is supposed to be built there?

  69. SCV needs a splash pad! Such a great way to help kids have fun and keep cool during our long hot months.

  70. Sad. What happened to the hotel plan?

  71. Linda Morgan says:

    City Council chambers?

  72. I loved the Greens!! Many good times at that place!!!

  73. A Dave and busters or sonic

  74. Derek Dean says:

    Well said, Megan-marie Alice Mills

  75. Splash park please! How does SCV not have one with our heat? C’mon Awesometown!

  76. Steve says:

    How about another dental office.

    HAHA,
    just kidding!

  77. Sonic or krispy kreme is all i will aprove of or a better mini golf place

  78. dumbass kids are too obvious & that should be a music club

  79. Okay PORTOS BAKERY this is your chance…….PLEASE COME TO THR SCV!

  80. I do like the idea of a splash park ( hv 6 g.kids ) , but not sure that is the best location for one.

  81. Ooooo Ooooo JOES CRAB SHACK! ♥

  82. Javi says:

We need a BASS PRO SHOP Mmm hmmmm….. ‘Merica

  83. Nadiya says:

First of all, living here since 1989, I never even knew this place existed.
The need for regular patrols in so many other parts of our city, Newhall and canyon country, seems much more of a priority….
And then the personal favorite ….
    SONIC!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!

  84. Joey Terena says:

    Aidan Robert Deming

  85. Jimmy Guzman says:

    The new THE GREEN’S

  86. Candace Rae says:

How About ANOTHER Greens. That place Was Fun. I Miss It……

  87. It’s so sad that it just was let go. It was a fun place. Mismanaged I guess:(

  88. Amber Heiman says:

Let’s just burn it down. But not the crabs. Keep the crabs

  89. Crossfit or some type of gym

  90. How are they fascists

  91. Bob Kacmar says:

But what fate for all the bunnies? No one mentioned the bunnies. THE BUNNIES!

  92. Bob Kacmar says:

Should be turned into a break room for the bus drivers. Maybe I’m just a little biased.

  93. Nicks McGee says:

This is the worst comment section I have ever seen. Sonic? Really?

  94. Someone asked “what’s going on,’ in scv…hard place to open and run a business. Ask the owner of Daper Dan’s car wash how much fun it was to work with the city. Restrictions on businesses are enormous and hoops are unreasonable. But our mall is awesome, right?!!

  95. David White says:

No more Restaurants, No more gyms. We can’t, or won’t support the ones that are here now. What do we have here for families and teens. Mountasia and the movies. How about something to help fill this void.

  96. Strip joint ! Oh Santa Clarita is too uptight. Do they even have one ??!

  97. Big boys or sonic or shakey’s or definitely Porto’s. Something with Foooooood. Please and thank you!

  98. Karla Posner says:

We had Shakey’s- closed and Big Boys- closed! Sonics would be good!

  99. Scv is ridiculously up tight, you know, lets just dump this crap ton of money on our sheriff’s department to do what, bust stoners???? Try moving out of your parents house in this town! Its impossible, sure its a beautiful place but everything is regulated to the point of having nothing to do because you cant do anything without being fined, ticketed or having to pay money, cant even hike in the mountains

  100. Should put a dave n busters there!

  101. Turning into a restaurant something fun

  102. J Mig Uel says:

The property is a few acres large. Most of the ideas can work for a smaller location. Dave and buster with an outdoor area would probably be a great idea but try getting that past the city. There is no way any gym that is corporately backed could afford such a place. That area of valencia pushes to $3 a sq ft.

  103. Jon Vang says:

We need to through a show their so it can be a Public Nuisance for sure

  104. Bryan Pievac says:

Can we just put something there already honestly build something or tear it down
If the owners aren’t going to do anything with it, let someone else buy the building off them if they are actually going to do something with it

  105. Santa Clarita’s city counsel is a public nuisance. How about a “Joes Crab Shack”

  106. I like joes crab shack

  107. MacroView says:

    P.F. CHANG’S!!
