The West Ranch and Saugus baseball teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
West Ranch eliminated Capistrano Valley, 8-5. JC Cloney hit a three-run home run and Gabe Peralta drove in two runs with a single for West Ranch.
The Wildcats play top-seeded Orange Lutheran on Friday.
The Saugus baseball team stunned Riverside North, 7-4, erasing a 4-0 deficit to advance in the playoffs.
Austin Rodriguez and Chris Devery homered for Saugus. Chris Danielson pitched five shut-out innings in relief to keep Saugus in the game.
The Centurions will play Newbury Park on Friday.
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team is still alive in the Division 7 playoffs. The Cardinals beat Temecula Prep, 2-1, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Clint Ross knocked in the winning run with an RBI groundout in the seventh inning.
It wasn’t such a good day for the softball teams from the Foothill League. They went 0-for-3 in the CIF softball playoffs.
West Ranch, the Foothill League champs, lost to Corona Santiago, 8-1, in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs.
Saugus lost to Foothill, 4-3. Alana Layton and Kayla Morrow each drove in a run for Saugus and had a one-run lead in the seventh inning. But the Centurions gave up two runs in the final frame and were knocked out of the playoffs.
Valencia put up the biggest fight, but lost to Orange Lutheran, 3-2, in 11 innings. Pitcher Carly Mortensen went the distance and Karlie Habitz hit a two-run home run, but it wasn’t enough.
In the Southern California Regional volleyball playoffs, Valencia lost to Palisades in four games and was eliminated from the Division I bracket.
In the NHL playoffs, the Kings are in the Stanley Cup final after a 4-3 overtime win against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Kings won the Western Conference title, 4-1, and reached the Stanley Cup championship for the second time in franchise history.
Dustin Penner scored the game-winner in overtime. The Kings await the winner of the Eastern Conference final between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers.
